Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice is considered to be one of the most interesting museums in Nice. It is located in the very center of the city and exhibits contemporary and modern art.

Perhaps I could be called ignorant, but the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice (Musée d’art moderne et d’art contemporain), in short MAMAC, does not completely appeal to me. I would not call most of the works collected there, art. I prefer the Museum of Fine Arts and the Massena Museum much more.

MAMAC is for me – with a few exceptions – a collection of random items. Although, in the guidebooks I read that this place is an important museum in Nice, which must be seen. If you’re interested in contemporary art, this may be the place for you.

Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice – an important place in Nice?

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice is worth seeing mainly due to the interesting shape of the building and the observation deck at its top. The museum consists of four windowless concrete towers, built on a square plan. They are connected with glazed corridors in the shape of arches. If the windows covering these passages were cleaned, one could even admire a nice view through them. The approach to the entrance of the building is also not very clean. During several of my visits to the area, the stairs leading to the entrance were full of broken bottles of alcohol and other rubbish.

The museum’s collection primarily  includes works by the creators of the European New Realism (mainly French), American pop art, and minimalism, all created after 1950. On the first floor you will find the temporary exhibitions, while the next two are occupied by permanent exhibitions. At the very top there is an observation deck, from where you can enjoy a 360 degree view of Nice.

MAMAC in Nice – practical information

The museum was opened in 1990. It is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10AM to 6PM. The admission tickets cost 10 euros, but you can also buy a ticket for 20 euros and visit other museums in Nice within seven days. You can take pictures in the museum, but without a flash.

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice is easy to locate because it stands right next to Garibaldi Square and just behind the ugly theater building at the end of the Paillon Promenade.

It is also worth knowing that there is a public library on the ground floor of the building, where an interesting sculpture stands in the garden. This is Tête Carrée from 2001 – the work of Sacha Sosno. This huge square head always attracts the attention of tourists who are walking around. It is also clearly visible from the roof terrace of the MAMAC, as is the Old Town of Nice, which is nearby.
