The Picasso Museum in Antibes is housed in Grimaldi Castle, which was inhabited by the artist during 1946. Today, you can admire Picasso’s works that were created in this place.

The Picasso Museum in Antibes was the first museum in the world devoted entirely to this artist. Established in 1966 in Grimaldi Castle (Château Grimaldi), it is where Pablo Picasso had his studio 20 years earlier. In autumn 1946, the building became too cold for further artistic work, which is why Picasso returned to Paris. He left 23 paintings and 44 drawings however, which today belong to the museum’s collection.

Among the artist’s works that are exhibited in Antibes is his famous La Joie de vivre (Joy of Life). In total there are 245 of Picasso’s works in the museum and you can also admire the ceramics he decorated, as well as the works of other artists.

The castle itself, once belonging to the Grimaldi family from Monaco, dates back to the 12th century, but it was rebuilt in the 16th century. Unfortunately, its interior does not resemble the rooms’ of a castle. Most of them have white walls and look like ordinary rooms in an apartment. In addition, there is no access to the tower, which probably has a great view of the entire Cap d’Antibes peninsula. However, there is a spacious terrace with a view of the sea and the yachts moored there.
