For a long time I bypassed the Fernand Léger museum in Biot for fear of being bored – meanwhile, inside, there were wonderful and colorful works by the artist and his friends, as well as a garden encouraging rest and relaxation.

I read somewhere that Fernand Léger was a French artist who wasn’t widely known. I immediately, and mistakenly, assumed that his work would not be interesting, so I avoided the Fernand Léger Museum in Biot (Musée National Fernand Léger). That is until I noticed his works while visiting the Museum of Modern Art in New York – colorful, abstract, and eye-catching.

The art collection at the Fernand Léger Museum

The Leger Museum in Biot was opened in 1960. It was funded by the artist’s widow – Nadia Léger – and his colleague, Georges Bauquier. The facility was built on property bought by Leger shortly before his death. The opening ceremony was attended by, among others, Picasso, Chagall, and Braque.

Fernand Léger was born in 1881 in France (Normandy) and died in 1955. He was a French artist associated with cubism. He not only painted, but created ceramics, graphics, frescoes, sculptures, and also directed films.

The artist’s works can be admired even before entering the museum. The building’s facade is decorated with a huge mosaic, a work Fernand Léger did not finish. It presents a sports theme because it was to be a decoration for the stadium in Hanover. The exhibit inside is a collection of the artist’s works from various periods of his artistic life. The collected works include not only paintings, but also stained glass, sculptures, and ceramics.
