Nice is the capital of the French Riviera. The city was founded by the Greeks in the third century BC and to this day, traces of ancient civilization can be found here. After the great la Belle Epoque, Nice today is a multicultural and cosmopolitan city. The city and the region are visited by about 10 million tourists each year. Entertainment can be found here at any time of the year, although the main season lasts from May to the end of September.
The Nice’s main attractions are:
- Promenade des Anglais (Walkway of the English) – a beautiful seaside promenade, 7 km long. Palms grow along the walkway, and the city beach is right beside it.
- The Old Town of Nice – the historic part of Nice, full of delicious restaurants, pubs, and souvenir shops. Here you will find the main city market (Cours Saleya) and narrow streets created by high and colorful tenement houses.
- Place Masséna – the main city square, ideal as a starting point to explore the city. It is also a meeting place for the inhabitants of Nice.
- Castle Hill (la Colline du Château) – a hill with a beautiful view of the entire city. Formerly, there used to be a castle here, but now there is a city park with a waterfall and look-out.
- Numerous museums with interesting art collections, including the works of some of the most outstanding painters of the 19th and 20th centuries.
You will find most of the attractions and interesting towns worth visiting in the vicinity of Nice. This and the the fact that the airport is almost in the city center makes Nice an ideal place as an accommodation base during your stay on the French Riviera.
