The Nobel Laureate Albert Camus lived in Lourmarin. His house still stands in the town, while the grave of this author of The Plague lies nearby. But that’s not all the attractions of this Provencal village.

Lourmarin is located in the center of Provence, right on the southern slope of the Luberon Massif. This small town attracts tourists, who visit the restored castle as well as the grave of Albert Camus, whose house is still to be found in the center of the town.

What to see in Lourmarin?

A visit to the town is best started by visiting the castle. You can leave your car at one of the car parks in the area, of which there are quite a few. Lourmarin’s castle dates from the 15th to 16th century, but was built on the ruins of a fortress from the 12th century. Inside, you can see interestingly constructed stairways, as well as richly decorated rooms full of antique furniture. Admission costs 7.50 euros and opening hours depend on the season. Detailed information can be found at chateau-de-lourmarin.com.

A visit to the castle will take up to an hour. Afterwards, go for a walk around the town, which is located right next door. In the center you will find many cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops. There are always a lot of tourists here because Peter Mayle, the author of numerous books about Provence, and who has made the region famous for many years, lived here. Based on one of his books, the movie Good Year, directed by Ridley Scott, was created with Russell Crowe in the lead role.

Albert Camus

Of course, the Nobel laureate Albert Camus is the most famous writer to have come from Lourmarin. The author of The Plague bought a house in the town with the money he received from the Nobel Prize. It still stands today on Camus Street and is inhabited by the writer’s daughter Catherine Camus. She cares for her father’s legacy and is eager to talk about his work and life.

Being in Lourmarin it is also worth visiting the grave of Albert Camus. The cemetery is located next to the town on the road leading to Aix-en-Provence. You can walk there in a few minutes from the center.
